Aylesbury’s young boxers do their coaches proud
Aylesbury Boxing Club's youngsters have done the town proud
AYLESBURY Boxing Club took three junior fighters to bouts at the Ruislip and District Show in Middlesex last Friday.
First on the card was 12 year old Jimmy Bell who squared off against Aaron Simms of Blackbird Leys boxing club.
It was Bell’s fighting debut and he performed well as he out-boxed his opponent throughout the three rounds to win by unanimous decision.
Next up was Lewis Brown who fought Tyrone McDonagh from Lynn ABC. It was a hotly contested fight in which the pendulum of advantage swung continuously with Brown using footwork and a strong jab to keep the aggressive McDonagh at bay in the first.
McDonagh took the second with an aggressive display and it was a fight to the finish line as both boxers slugged it out in the third. In the end it could have been anyone’s fight and the judges gave the nod to McDonagh in a split decision.
The final fighter for Aylesbury was Lee Blackmore who was against Ruislip’s Daniel Richardson. It was fireworks from the start as both boxers opened up with big shots, Richardson playing the long-range game using sharp one-two’s and Blackmore answering with inside uppercuts and counter hooks.
Towards the end of the first, Blackmore hit Richardson with a thunderous right hand down the middle which wobbled the Ruislip fighter however the Aylesbury fighter failed to push his on and finish the fight.
The second round was more untidy with the taller Richardson attempting to push Blackmore into the corner. In one of these, exchanges the referee gave Blackmore a controversial standing eight, despite it seeming more of a push than a punch.
Near the end of the round Blackmore was left bleeding from the nose and seconds later the referee stopped the bout to the disapproval of the crowd.
Coach Andy Watkins said: “It is what it is, I don’t think it should have been stopped, it was a great fight and the third round might have won it for Lee.
“Lee is itching to get back in the ring and redeem himself and I am sure he will.”
