Mark Webber’s horrific run quite literally continued long into the night as the Red Bull man was hit with a 20-second penalty that denied him a point in Singapore on Sunday.

It was the season’s first night race, but it was the same old story for the former championship leader after he received a penalty for an illegal overtaking manoeuvre.

The Aussie from Aston Clinton was handed the punishment for running off the course as he overtook Sauber’s Kamui Kobayash – a move which is forbidden under Formula 1 rules – late in the race.

Webber had finished 10th to earn a solitary point, but was promptly relegated to 11th, while Sauber’s Sergio Perez was promoted one position.

It was the culmination of a tricky weekend at the Marina Bay Circuit for the straight-talking star. And it means he must start winning again to at Suzuka to have any realistic hopes of the 2012 drivers’ title.

“It’s not easy to overtake at this track, so you’re making your life hard when you have a bad qualifying,” Webber said.

“You need a bit of luck to make progress and I didn’t have any! I thought Kobayashi and I had a good clean fight, but the stewards thought otherwise and I respect their decision.”

Mark’s 11th place in Singapore leaves him fifth in the world championship standings. The gap to Fernando Alonso at the top of the table is 62 points and there are 150 points still up for grabs.

“The championship is getting harder,” he admitted.

“But I never give up and I’ll continue to take each race as it comes. The next race is at Suzuka (October 7), which is one of my favourite tracks. I’ve always gone pretty well there and I hope to get a good result.”
