Lee's time to shine as Brentford's number one

Aylesbury's Richard Lee looks increasingly likely to regain his number one spot at Brentford after impressing manager Andy Scott.

The former Aylesbury Grammar School pupil (pictured main) has found himself on the bench since his summer move but was given his opportunity against former Premier League outfit Hull City and starred in their Carling Cup triumph.

Lee made a string of excellent saves, reducing the visitors to just a single goal and many thought he would have got the nod in the latest round of league fixtures.

However Scott stuck with Alex McCarthy in goal and the on-loan keeper conceded three goals which could result in Lee being put back between the sticks.

Lee said: "The Hull game was great and it was good to get back to the form I had with Watford.

"Hull are a good team and gave me a lot to do but hopefully now I have given the manager a tough decision to make."

Lee left Watford during the close season to get more first team football but after just two pre-season matches was dropped as Brentford's number one.

"The season didn't quite get off to the start I had hoped for," said Lee.

"I played a couple of games in pre-season which didn't go great but it was really disappointing to lose my spot."

Despite the setback Lee remains confident and will be ready to step in when called upon.

He said: "I am always confident in myself and I know when my opportunity comes I will take it."

If Lee is not picked for the next game against Sheffield Wednesday there is a chance he will be for the upcoming weeks as McCarthy is only on loan. The ex-Bedgrove Dynamos player had been number one at Watford before being pushed down the pecking order by Ben Foster.

And despite the England international moving onto Manchester United Lee was never able to regain his place in the side.

Lee dropped down a division to play for Brentford and was told he would be first choice for the League One side. But until he gets his chance Lee will have to impress in training.
