An Aylesbury United legend has paid tribute to his former assistant manager, Terry Back, who died in a motorbike accident on Wednesday (October 24) in Huntingdon.

Back, 44, was Ducks’ former striker Cliff Hercules’ right-hand man when he managed United in 2001.

His highlights included helping Hercules lead United into the Rymans Premier Division and to the first round of the FA Cup against Port Vale.

Hercules said: “He was a character, a big character. He was great to have in the changing room.

“It was great, we used to tell players ‘you will remember this season for the rest of your lives’.

“He was a fun loving guy, your typical cockney. We had such a laugh. He just made everybody feel at ease. It’s really sad and so shocking. He was so young as well. He lived and loved life.”

United chairman Graham Read said: “It’s a tragic accident. He was one of the lads, a character and a really good karaoke singer.

“He’s very much associated with the club. We had a minute’s applause at the game on Saturday which was respectful. “He was a big part of Aylesbury’s successful years and our condolences go out to his friends and family.”

Read added the club had spoken to Back about rejoining the Ducks before appointing Tony Joyce.
