Risborough Rangers succumbed to back-to-back friendly defeats this week as their pre-season campaign continues ahead of their opening game of the SSML Division One season away at Woodford Town on Saturday, August 8.

First up, following wins over Clean Slate and Thame United, Risborough travelled to take on MK-based Loughton Manor. However, this time it was the the South Midlands League Division Two hosts who prevailed as they fought back from 3-1 down on the hour-mark to run out 5-3 winners.

In a bizarre encounter and what was a great advert for the neutral supporter with numerous chances going begging, Rangers should have had the game sewn up before the break as they failed to convert a number of opportunities and only stout defending and great goalkeeping kept the score down.

The Scorers for Risborough on the night were Dean Stenning, Ryan Daly and a 30-yarder from Shaun Rayner.

Two days later on Saturday, Rangers played their first home friendly when they entertained Marlow United. who stepped in at the eleventh hour for Chalfont Wasps who were unable to raise a team.

The visitors from the Thames Valley Premier Division did not disappoint when they came away with a 4-3 victory having trailed by two goals at the break in another exciting affair.

Risborough had led at half-time thanks to efforts from Will Barnard and Laurence Clark but the second half started with United coming out of the blocks the quickest.

The visitors’ persistence paid off and within 10 minutes of the restart they netted three quick-fire goals.

Risborough then briefly rallied and equalised on the hour when a Martin Griggs free-kick was parried by the keeper for Chris Davis, who was on hand to slot home.

With the parity restored, the hosts were caught out five minutes later when Marlow scored again to take the advantage through to the final whistle with Rangers looking tired after two games in three days.

This Thursday, Risborough host Tring Athletic in another local pre-season friendly, kick-off 7.30pm.

On Saturday, Rangers are again at home in their final friendly fixture against Oxford City Nomads from the Hellenic Premier Division, kick-off is 3.00pm.
