Jonathan is a Constant menace as Aylesbury FC produce another comeback to beat Cambridge City in Red Insure Cup
Aylesbury FC in action
After a brilliant comeback from 2-0 down to hit AFC Hayes for six at the weekend, Aylesbury went into Tuesday night’s first round game against Premier Division opposition on a high but they were in for another roller coaster ride.
Cambridge dominated proceedings in the first half with FC keeper Richard Roberts repelling wave after wave of attacks from the visitors.
The building pressure was eventually converted into goals for Cambridge, Craig Hammond scoring on 21 minutes and James Brighton doubling the deficit 14 minutes later.
Craig Faulconbridge said he ‘ripped into his side’ at half-time against AFC Hayes on Saturday. And a similar teamtalk may have been needed as FC sat in the changing rooms facing an early exit from the cup.
Whatever was said, it certainly did the trick, and FC fans were in for a treat.
Strikers James Faulkner and player-boss Faulconbridge moved into defence to shore up an unlikely back four.
The move paid off as Aylesbury got themselves back in the game on 54 minutes when man of the match Jonathan Constant found a way past the City keeper.
Just moments later the game was level, as second half sub Kurt Morlese poked home to set up an enthralling finale.
The drama was far from over as with two minutes to play until dreaded extra-time, FC got their reward for buying into Faulconbridge’s much-derised ‘Barca-style’ football.
Some intricate interplay between Sonny French and dangerman Constant on the edge of the box produced a final opportunity for Jamie Connor who was again the comeback king when he slotted the ball home for an unexpected and quite breathtaking 3-2 victory.
