Emmerson Boyce was in the Premier League spotlight at the weekend as he scored one of the goals of the season after taking part in the controversial snubbing of an anti-racism campaign.
The defender produced a majestic flying volleyed back heel into the top corner to give his Wigan Athletic side a fighting chance in their 2-1 defeat at Swansea.
The former Quarrendon School pupil said: “The lads gave me a bit of a stick. It would have been better if we had won because it was a good goal. All I want to do is talk about it!”
In truth it was a strike that the Ronaldo’s and Messi’s of this world would have been proud of and indeed had one of those players scored it we would be seeing it re-run for weeks. And Boyce was quick to agree.
“If I was at one of the top teams they would be saying it’s world class. When you are a less well known player that’s the down side. It will be going in my collection book and at least I can give Matty (Phillips, Blackpool winger and Boyce’s cousin who is also from Aylesbury) some stick.”
The goal came after Boyce and Wigan snubbed the Kick Racism Out Of Football campaign, following in the footsteps of players such as Rio Ferdinand and Reading’s Jason Roberts.
However, Boyce said the true nature of the protest had been lost in translation.
He said: “People are taking it the wrong way. It’s more a case of what the protest is about rather than a shirt.
“I think people have got to look deeper than that. It’s about making more people aware and unfortunately this is the only way to do it.”
The 33 year old said he had experienced racial abuse from opposition fans while playing for Luton Town at the start of his career.
