Arsenal striker White helps England to vital win
Ellen White playing for England
Aylesbury footballer Ellen White was on the scoresheet once again as she helped England to an important 2-0 Euro qualifying home victory over Serbia.
In the match at Doncaster last Wednesday, Arsenal striker White rifled in a rebound 10 minutes after the break to put her country two goals ahead.
Defeating Serbia mean’s the Three Lions reclaimed second place in their Euro 2013 qualifying group, two points behind leaders Netherlands.
White had a hand in her side’s first goal when she combined well with Rachel Yankey to set up Jess Clarke to open the scoring.
Serbia had come back from 2-0 down to draw the away fixture 2-2 in Belgrade, continued to press forward but a third goal never came.
England have four group games remaining with the key fixture being June’s home game against the Netherlands.
Manager Hope Powell told the BBC: “We didn’t play to our best, but we did dominate the game and should have scored more goals, again.
“Realistically it will probably come down to the Holland game, but we’ve got important games in between.
“We played well in patches, but it was the fundamentals - sloppy passing at times - that was disappointing.”
White, who will soon be in the running for the Bucks Herald Sports Personality of the Year award, is currently touring Japan with Arsenal.
