Arsenal Ladies striker Ellen White says 2012 has been her ‘best year yet’ after the Gunners beat Birmingham 1-0 to retain the FA WSL Continental Cup last week.
The former Bedgrove star started at the Underhill Stadium as Arsenal sealed victory thanks to a late Kim Little strike.
The 23-year-old striker said: “It’s been one of the best years ever. It was definitely a trophy we wanted to keep from last season. Especially against Birmingham as they are our main rivals.”
The win meant a fifth trophy in two years for White as the Gunners held off the Blues’ challenge to retain the league and the striker said team spirit was vital to the club’s continued success.
“All the girls are singing off the same hymn sheet. The group we have got are great players,” she added.
While a double for the Gunners delighted White there was no doubting her highlight of the season came in the summer.
“Getting picked for the Olympics was brilliant,” she said.
“It was unbelievable. We never really expected it, we always just thought about World Cups, so to get the chance with Team GB and in your home country was great.”
While White did not turn out as regularly as she would have liked she still relished the experience, especially when meeting the likes of football superstar and former England skipper David Beckham.
“I could have feinted. I didn’t but I could have!” White recalled.
“We went to watch Team GB men play and he invited us to meet him. It was lovely.”
At just 23 White has already crammed a lot into her career but winning the Champions League is the next trophy on her sporting agenda.
“That’s the one we want to win. It’s at a different level, it’s the best versus the best.”
Arsenal play Potsdam in the last 32 on November 1 and White will also be in action when England play France on Saturday (live on BBC Three, kick-off 7.50pm).
