Thame teams fall foul of the weather

Thame Town’s 1st XI endured a frustrating afternoon on Saturday as their home game against Datchet was called off due to rain without a ball being bowled.

They travel to take on Oxford on July 2, and there was the same result for Thame IIs at Horspath, meaning that their lead at the top of Cherwell Division Five was cut to 9 points.

Thame third XI travelled to face Cropredy, hopeful of at least a shortened game and the chance to keep up with league leaders Buckingham Town.

It didn’t look good with hail falling onto an uncovered pitch, but an immediate tea meant a 40-over match was possible.

Thame lost the toss and were put into bat. In a difficult innings, where the ball struggled to reach the boundary, they stuttered to 109-9 off of 40 overs, thanks mainly to Ian Chappell’s patient 41.

Liam Earwicker (16) was the only other batsmen to make double figures.

With the pitch deteriorating further, Thame set about trying to defend the low total, with Nick Fuller and Will Bruce-Morgan picking up one wicket each in their opening spells.

The captain, Vim Desai, again bowled well, taking 3-20, but Cropredy never looked set on chasing the target. Scott Chappell and a Luke McStay run out gave Thame more bonus points but the home side’s stubborn defence earned a share of the points, with Thame taking 13 points from the game to stay second in Cherwell League Division Nine North.
