BOWLERS HAVE PLENTY TO CHEER IN 2002

THE Vale's bowlers had a year to remember in 2002.Four players from Aylesbury Town Bowls Club took on the cream of the country's bowlers when they took part in the All England national finals in August.

The club had its biggest presence in the finals since 1989 the year they had finalists in the county singles, pairs and triples.

Club chairman George Milligan competed in the singles, while Les Richardson, Trevor Room and Ed Pilgrim represented Bucks in the triples.

Aylesbury Town also gained a notable scalp when they beat a strong Bucks County Executive side 122-100 in their annual match in August.

There was a new name on the roll of honour in the Gargini Cup in 2002 when Molins triumphed in August at Hazells Bowls Club.

Earlier in the summer, bowlers from all over the Aylesbury Vale had gathered at Wendover and Chiltern Hills Bowls Club to celebrate John How's 50 years as a member in July. John, 87, who was sports editor of the Bucks Advertiser, the Herald's sister paper, for many years, was in attendance and played a few ends before retiring to watch the festivities.

In indoor bowls, a pair from Aylesbury-based Foxhill IBC finished runners-up in a prestigious national bowls competition in April.

Wendy James and David Fox reached the final of the Golden Charter EIBA national mixed pairs at Lawson Park (Bedford).

Fox also reached the semi-finals of the Welsh International Masters UK play-offs before losing to Marc Wyatt, of Cardiff in September.

Foxhill IBC celebrated their 10th anniversary in style with a 128-107 shot victory over an English Indoor Bowling Association team in October.

Stoke Mandeville Indoor Bowls Club reopened in December for the first time since a fire gutted the facilities nearly two years ago.

The club, based at the newly-renamed Stoke Mandeville Stadium, marked the grand reopening with a match between the men and the ladies.
