Battling Aylesbury pay the price for handing out gifts

Aylesbury pay the price for gifting the opposition 21 points when they lost their opening game of the season at Thatcham 39-27.

Ays went 3-0 up against the newly-promoted hosts as both sides showed a bit of ring rustiness with errors creeping into the game as promising moves time and again broke down.

Thatcham turned things around, though and led 10-6 at the break. Ays coach Dave Larham’s half-time talk made it clear his side needed to improve their workrate and keep driving the ball around the ruck and maul.

But it fell on deaf ears as Thatcham extended their lead to 17-6 in the early knockings.

Ays did eventually respond to Larham’s request and improved their workrate and Adam Moore dove over to score. Woodfall slotted the conversion to make it 17-13.

But then the referee inexplicably sin binned captain Gary Horne and Thatcham slowly increased their lead to 32-13. Back at full strength Ays fought back to 32-20 but yet another loose pass was intercepted soon after and the Thatcham player ran in another try to take the score to 39-20. Horne drove the ball over the line to make the final score to 39-27.

Ays entertain Alchester on Saturday (3pm).
