Aylesbury Vale's sporting youngsters strike gold

Aylesbury Vale's sporting youngsters struck gold at the Bucks Youth Games sports extravaganza in Milton Keynes at the weekend.

The squad of 200 young people that made up the district council's team showed great sportsmanship and had enormous fun participating in the Olympic-style games. For many this was their first taste of competing in an organised sporting event.

Overall the Aylesbury Vale team won three gold medals, four silvers and two bronze medals. The team also came third in the fair play award.

Organised by the Bucks and Milton Keynes Sports Partnership, the Youth Games is a competition between the four district councils in Buckinghamshire, plus Milton Keynes Council.

Every year hundreds of youngsters from primary and secondary schools across the county enjoy taking part in the Games in a variety of sports. This year Aylesbury Vale entered teams for athletics, basketball, boccia, football, hockey, netball, rugby, swimming and tennis.

The teams were chosen through a series of trials, competitions and selection events organised by Aylesbury Vale District Council's sports development team and the Aylesbury Vale competition manager.

Councillor David Thompson, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: "The youngsters who took part really did the district proud. To take home nine medals was a fantastic achievement. Hopefully the young people that are not already engaged in clubs around the district will now proceed to join their local clubs and continue to get pleasure out of playing sport."
