Aylesbury's Woody eyes amazing comeback
Aylesbury biker Dave Wood continued his climb up the RC8 Super Cup Championship after a win at Thruxton on Sunday.
The 41 year old won pole position at Thruxton by a whole second and comfortably beat Francis Williamson to take the chequered flag in first.
Combined with a win and second place at Donington the week before- and current championship leader Kelvin Reilly crashing out in one of those races- Wood has reduced what was a 75 point gap between the two after three rounds to 43 after six.
An amazing comeback against Reilly would be particularly sweet, as it was his team who reported Wood to the race authorities over his 'illegal' throttle part which resulted him in being stripped of his two wins at the season opener at Brands Hatch- despite Woody's protestations that he was unaware of the rule and that it offered him no advantage.
Reilly was awarded the wins and then moved further ahead at Oulton when Woody crashed out.
"This would be my greatest championship ever," Wood said. "I have come from behind before but being 75 points behind after three races is unheard of.
"He (Reilly) seems to be making mistakes at the moment as all the pressure is on him.
"Although he is leading the championship he is not winning races and he has started to make silly mistakes which is good for me," said Wood, who is currently sixth in the drivers' standings.
Next up are rounds seven and eight at Snetterton on June 19-21. Wood, who owns Dave Wood Racing in Broadfield Court, Aylesbury, said: "It is a track where I have won many races before so hopefully I can do the double there."
