Aylesbury FC: Vice chairman Martone proud of legacy

The vice-chairman of Aylesbury FC has spoken of his pride at seeing the team he helped create in the early 1990s evolve into a new semi-professional football club in the town.

Aylesbury FC has been formed out of Aylesbury Vale, although the original plan was also to bring homeless Aylesbury United on board until a deal to buy the club fell through at the last minute.

Danny Martone, who helped set up Belgrave in 1992 which went on to become Vale, admitted his disappointment at not being able to join forces with The Ducks.

"It was never designed to be Aylesbury Vale on its own, it was always with the thought of both clubs coming together," he said.

He said he had no regrets that Vale no longer exists in name. "I don't look at it as Vale being no more, I am looking at it as a turning of the chapter of football in Aylesbury and that my club is very proud to be part of that history and legacy of football in the town."

"My main role in the club will be to help Roger (Roger Dance, the new chairman) feel his way into the club. Obviously I will have match day responsibilities but I will concentrate my main efforts on bringing the ground (Haywood Way) up to Southern League standard.

"We need very little to achieve that level but it is a job that needs to be done."

Vale's former chairman, Bill Harrison, who is now AFC president, said: "I am very excited by this new venture. It is for the benefit of the town. If it does take off and we get bigger crowds which brings a bigger budget, there is nothing to say that in three years' time we can't be in the Southern League looking towards The Conference."
