Thompson tells troops to toughen up

DUCKS boss Tony Thompson urged his side to toughen up after United lost 2-1 to Chasetown in last Saturday's league finale.
The Ducks were keen to end the season on a high and looked set for the three points against Chasetown after defender Stuart Cattell headed them into a first-half lead.

However, a characteristic failure to deal with set-pieces after the break saw visiting striker Danny Smith level matters, before Lucan Spittle completed Chasetown's comeback with an 81st minute winner.
Thompson afterwards praised his side's application, but bemoaned the lapses in focus that have blighted United's season.

He said:"We competed well against a good side, but were undone by two bad goals. A lot of it's to do with us being young and inexperienced; we'll play really well for 89 minutes - but then switch off and concede due to a lack of concentration. "

Shot-shy United started with James Faulkner and Craig Henney up top, but - despite grafting - both frontmen were unable to get on the scoresheet. However, Thompson, who employed a 5-3-2 formation for the game, believes his strikeforce aren't solely to blame for the goals drying up.

He added: "We haven't scored enough goals from midfield, which is why we tried something different. The 5-3-2 enables us to get a midfielder up in support and it's something we will be looking at over the summer. Saying that, the form of our forwards has definitely dropped off in the latter part of the season."

Despite their victory, cup giantkillers Chasetown - who went out of the FA Cup to this year's finalists Cardiff City - missed out on a play-off place by a single point. The Ducks' landlords Chesham United also suffered play-off heartbreak - as they were edged out by an even smaller margin: Rushall Olympic beating them to fifth spot on goal difference.
