Jubilation and despair after head-to-head between Vale-born footballers

THERE was unbridled joy and the desperation of defeat for two Vale-born footballers when they went head-to-head in a Championship play-off semi-final this week.
Hull City defender Sam Ricketts, who was born and raised in Wendover, was mobbed by jubilant fans as Hull hammered Watford, who had former Aylesbury Grammar School student and Bedgrove Dynamos player Richard Lee in goal, 4-1 (6-1 on aggregate).
Ricketts was solid over the two legs as was Lee but it was the former who came out on top to book his place at Wembley for the final against Bristol City and the chance of promotion to the Premiership elite, a game estimated to be worth more than £50 million to the winning club.
Lee's Watford faced an uphill battle from the start against in-form Hull at the KC Satdiuum on Wednesday night, where they trailed 2-0 from the first leg.
Despite Darius Henderson's early goal giving Watford plenty of hope, Ricketts' side held their nerve and eventually cantered to a comfortable win. Lee made some vital saves to keep the score down to four, but was caught off his line after a moment of indecision for Hull's second goal of the night.
Welsh international Ricketts, who used to enjoy horseriding with his family in the Vale, will be part of the side to take on Bristol in the final next Saturday (May 24).
