HALTON Ladies First Team showed plenty of grit and determination to beat Loughborough University on Saturday, to reach the finals of the National Club League.
The competition sees around 400 teams competing each year throughout the UK, with only eight teams making it to the National Finals- so the result was an impressive feat for Halton.
Halton got off to a bad start with Heather McNeill losing to Suzanna Dyrbus, who showed her great experience to prevail 6-2 6-1.
However, captain Jemima Hayward then proved too strong for Rachael Hall, and after a close first set she ran away with the match winning 6-3 6-0.
With the score standing at 1-1 it was down to Celia Bristow and Lereesa Easterbrook to put Halton into the lead.
Celia struggled in the first set against Laura Pettingale, losing 3-6, however she didn't give up and despite being down in the second set she won it 7-5.
The final set was extremely tight but Celia proved more determined and won it 7-5.
16 year-old Lereesa Easterbrook then played Annabel Blow.
She got off to a flying start and won the first set 6-4, however her opponent fought back and found her range in the second set to win it 6-3.
The final set was extremely tight with some high quality rallies and both girls having the chance to win.
Annabel was serving for the match at 6-5 when Lereesa broke her serve, and then won 9-7 in the tiebreak.
This meant that Halton were 3-1 up and only needed one win in the doubles round to win the match.
With confidence high, Emily Quin came in to play the second doubles pairing with Hayward and they dominated their opposition of Laura Pettingale/Kim Johnson to win by a very convincing margin of 6-1 6-1.
The first doubles pair of Easterbrook/ Bristow put the icing on the cake when they also won their doubles, despite being 1-4 down in the first set – winning the match 6-4 6-4.
This resulted in a magnificent 5-1 win for Halton. They can now look forward to the National Finals at West Hants Club, Bournemouth, in September with the chance of becoming National Champions.
