Wealdstone were the worthy winners at Haywood Way over the 90 minutes, but were given a huge scare by an Aylesbury side which plays two levels below them.

An upset looked to be on the cards after Gareth Price's shot beat Stones keeper Sean Thomas with only two minutes gone, and then Craig Hennney converted from the spot after Dean Brennan was brought down in the box ten minutes later.

Aylesbury were playing some brilliant football at this point, with Price particularly effective down the wing.

However, Wealdstone's Greg Ngoyi pulled one back after 26 minutes, although Aylesbury recovered well and both sides had chances before they went into the break.

The fourth goal of the match was always going to be crucial, and unfortunately it came for Wealdstone right at the start of the second half, when Aylesbury's Ben Stevens got caught in possession and Ryan Ashe was able to level the score.

Mark Eaton's men looked rocked by the turn of events- and for the rest of the match their performance was a shadow of what it was in the first half.

Things got even worse after 48 minutes, when a brilliant Wealdstone move saw Kieron Forbes put them 3-2 up.

Wealdstone remained on top despite being reduced to ten men when Ngoyi was sent off with 20 minutes to go.

Nathan Graham was brought on for Kieron Schmidt but made little impact, and Ryan Ashe made certain of the result with less than ten minutes to go.

Despite the disappointment of being defeated in the final qualification round, Aylesbury can take great heart from their cup run and today's first-half performance, in which they really did play some sublime football and had a very good Wealdstone side on the back foot.

They can now turn their full attention to their primary aim, winning promotion out of the South Midlands into the Southern League.
