HERE's a taster of new fishing columnist Kim Wharton' May column - read it and get hooked!
'Last month, I suggested targeting perch at commercial fisheries. With a specimen stripy in mind, I made a trips to Peatling Pool in Leicestershire. The fishery doesn't allow the use of live baits, so I tackled up with a float-fished lobworm. With masses of roach and carp also present there was a chance that something other than a perch would pick up my bait.

The day spent in Leicestershire was uncharacteristically warm, encouraging a few carp to show near the surface. The perch were notably absent, so I switched to floating crust presented on 4lb line - I had foolishly left anything stronger at home! To avoid scaring the fish I crept forward on my knees and flicked the bread crust into the water just a couple of feet from the bank. Soon after casting, the bread was slurped down by a dark shadow. The carp, a mirror of 12lb 7oz, put up a great scrap, but the 4lb line held firm. Another carp of 11lb 12oz made a decent brace. Sometimes pays to switch tactics.

With the relatively cold and wet weather, reports of tench have been few and far between. They should start feeding more consistently during May. I am planning to start my campaign for tench and bream on local stillwaters, whilst continuing to fish for carp on the Grand Union Canal.
