THIS week we again look back to the 1980s with a selection of stories and pictures from January and February 1983
Children Follow Round the World Adventure, January 13 edition:

Geography became a bit more interesting for a class at St Edward's RC Middle School in Aylesbury as they followed the travels of a retired couple on a world cruise.

The couple sent back postcards from each of their ports of call, and in return the children sent information about the countries they landed in. The highlight for pupils was a visit to Southampton to see P&O's new ship, The Sea Princess.

Duke opens Blue Leanie, January 20 edition:

The Duke of Gloucester opened the then Equitable Life's new offices in Walton Street, which were nicknamed The Blue Leanie due to their unusal shape and colour. The building replaced the garage premises of Cogger and Hawkins, and was completed two weeks ahead of schedule. The Duke said it was a memorable departure from the norm.

Woman engineer in a man's world at Molins, February 3 edition:

A young woman from Aylesbury added a feminine touch to a male dominated workplace at Molins tobacco machiney firm in Saunderton. Liz Charleston, who was then 21, was one of 15 people to receive diplomas marking the end of a four year apprenticeship at the firm. She said: "It's a different and very satisfying job and women are just as capable of doing it as men, apart from the odd time when a little muscle is needed. I think women have a lot to contribute to engineering."

Chilton House gets new wing, February 17 edition:

Staff and residents of Chilton House, near Long Crendon, celebrated the opening of a new wing. The opening was performed by Sir John Aubrey Fletcher and Lady Aubrey Fletcher. The new wing accommodated 12 extra residents.

Pancake fun at Manor House, February 24 edition:

A party of women in fancy dress made sure that pancake day did not fall flat. Dressed up as various well-known TV characters, six members of staff at Manor House Hospital in Aylesbury held a pancake race and raised £100 to pay for the residents' Easter party and presents.
