From skating to protesting
This week we again look back at the 1980s with a selection of stories and pictures from January and February 1984.
New Year rung in traditional bell style (ringing out the old, ringing in the new)- Jan 5, 1984
The New Year was rung-in in traditional style, by the bells of St. Mary's Parish Church Aylesbury, for the first time in 130 years.
At 11.30pm, a band of ringers headed by Captain of the Tower Mike Sharp, rang out the old year. Then the midnight hour was chimed on the bells, and 1984 was welcomed in by a full ring of eight.
Hot Sales - Jan 5, 1984
Many chestnuts were pulled out of the fire in a good cause by members of the Aylesbury Lions Club in the past month.'
On Saturdays throughout December the club sold chestnuts in Market Square, hoping to show a profit of £500.
Surprised Santa - Jan 5, 1984
Wes Lewis, who had been acting as Santa at the Civic Centre for 16 days before Christmas was given a surprise presentation.
He was conned into thinking that he was posing for a staff photo - then on rushed Sue Underwood dressed as a bunny girl.
Ice Skating at Aylesbury High School - Feb 2, 1984
It looked like ice and felt like it when you fell - but the floor was in fact covered with treated synthetic tiles for a High School Association fundraising event."
The rink was set up in the school's Harding Hall in under two hours. About 500 pupils, parents and friends turned up to slip and slide around the surface.
Noel's Forced Landing - Feb 2, 1984
Radio and television star Noel Edmonds literally dropped in on Monks Risborough on Friday when fog forced his helicopter down.'
After circling he eventually landed in a field next to Mill Lane missing 15 grazing beef cattle and a tethered horse.
When he came to pick up his helicopter the following day he was swamped by autograph hunters. Some children waited nearly three hours for him to come."
The verdict on the star who fell to earth was: he was really quite nice.
Protesters Lobby vale Committee - Feb 23 1984
A protest was made on Monday against the refusal of AVDC to allow organisations of a political nature to use the Market Square."
The protest was initiated by the Aylesbury Constituency Labour Party, who were joined by peace campaigners, and members of the Friends of the Earth group.
