From carnival queen to an orphaned fawn
THIS week we again look back to the 1980s with a selection of stories and pictures from July and August 1983.
Aylesbury woman crowned Carnival Queen, July 7 edition, 1983:
Over 300 people packed the Civic Centre to see Nikki Simpson winning the Miss Aylesbury prize.
She was picked by a panel of five judges and won prizes worth £300, including a watch, silver pendant, and gift vouchers.
The 1983 Aylesbury and District Primary Schools Athletic Championships, July 21 edition, 1983:
A total of 32 schools contested the track events over two evenings.
Schools were split into four sections depending on their size with Wendover, Rushmead of Winslow, Meadowcroft, and Wingrave Combined School winning their sections.
Prince and Princess of Wales open new spinal injuries centre at Stoke Mandeville, August 11 edition, 1983:
Organisers of the visit had played down rumours that Princess Diana would be coming along with her husband to the opening, so the waiting crowds had a big surprise when she turned up unexpectedly.
The royal couple were accompanied by Jimmy Saville in visiting patients and unveiling a plaque to mark the official opening.
Aylesbury United face top-flight Tottenham Hotspur, August 11 edition, 1983:
A friendly match saw Tottenham fielding a half-strength first team to play the plucky Ducks underdogs.
Spurs first team players Ray Clemence, Paul Price, Garry Brooke, and Terry Gibson all took to the field, while England international Garry Mabbutt spectated and gave autographs.
The end result was 4-0 in favour of Spurs, but the Aylesbury supporters were happy to have seen a top class side in action.
Bambi is latest arrival at wildlife hospital, August 18 edition, 1983:
Sue Stocker and her husband Les were fawning over the latest in-patient at their Aylesbury Wildlife Hospital.
The three-month-old fawn, named Bambi, was orphaned and given to the Stockers to care for.
She was undernourished and weak when she was discovered but her health had picked up since her arrival at the hospital.
