From Scout celebrations to fashion parades
This week we again look back at the 1980s with a selection of stories and pictures from March and April 1984.
Scout and Guide Double Celebrations - March 1
Pictures of the Aylesbury Scout and Guides who had a joint celebration for different reasons were printed in the paper this week.
The event celebrated by the 11th Aylesbury Scouts and Cubs took place at the Scout headquarters in Meadowcroft and marked the birthday of Lord Badden-Powell who founded the movement in 1907.
Girls and women joined in the merriment because it was also the birthday of his wife on the same day, February 23. She founded the Guides in 1910 and so this day was kept as Thinking Day by the Guides and Brownies.
Firefighters Demo - March 1
A firefighting and rescue exercise was put forward for Her Majesty's Inspector of Fire Services at Aylesbury fire station.
Twelve men of White Watch and their station commander were put through rigorous paces during the annual visit of the inspector.
They demonstrated a dummy rescue from the third floor of the station drill tower using a 35ft ladder, showed how they use breathing apparatus and practised an emergency evacuation.
Five stations in Bucks received a visit from the inspector over four days and a written report was forwarded to the Home Secretary.
Radio 4 Broadcast - March 8
On March 18 Radio 4 broadcast a show with interviews of people from Aylesbury. Les and Sue Stocker, of Tiggywinkles in Haddenham, but then known as The Aylesbury Welfare Hospital in Pemberton Close, were interviewed for ten minutes. Other locals who featured in the show included David Gallstone of CBS Records in Rabans Lane, Alison Ambrose, an author of a book about the Aylesbury Duck, and Brian Downton, who was responsible for the district council sponsored mobile gymnasium in Little Horton.
Fashion at Sir Henry Floyd - April 5
Teachers at the school walked the catwalk in front of 750 people with Noel Edmonds as compere. They were raising funds for the Phoenix Appeal to replace equipment lost in a fire the previous year. A total of £2,000 was raised from the sale of tickets and put in the fund. An extra £1,000 was collected from the sale of a variety of posters and signed autographs by Noel Edmonds and a prize draw. The star commented that he was delighted to be able to compere the show for the school because he had spent six years of his youth living in the area. Also in the audience was comedy actor and radio personality, John Junkin. The models had a complete hair and beauty make-over by Tramps from Bedgrove. Beauticians from Janes in Kingsbury helped with the make-up.
