Festival spirit in town
THIS week we again look back to the 1980s with a selection of stories and pictures from July and August 1983.
Fourth Annual Aylesbury Beer Festival, Sept 8 edition, 1983:
The festival really 'took off' when high winds ripped several gaping holes in the festival marquee.
But a new marquee was soon erected and the festival was considered a success with more than 2,500 pints, of the 16 different brews on offer, drunk over two days.
Chinese Festival in High Street, Sept 22 edition, 1983:
There was an oriental atmosphere in Aylesbury High Street when the Jade Garden Chinese restaurant held a Unicorn Festival.
The traditional Chinese celebration was the first to be held in the town and was a great success, with professional 'dragon dancers' and Chinese delicacies, provided by the restaurant's chefs, to eat.
Jimmy Savile continues Spinal Injuries Unit Appeal, Sept 22 edition, 1983:
Radio DJ and TV personality Jimmy Savile was presented with £50,000 towards his appeal at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.
Jimmy led a tour of the new unit and thanked local companies for their donations to the appeal. He was resplendent in a full-length blue kaftan.
Fawn finds its feet, Sept 22 edition, 1983:
After nearly a month of loving care and attention one of the latest arrivals at the Stocker's Wildlife Hospital really found its feet.
When it first arrived at the hospital it had been so weak that it was unable to walk but with the help of Sue and Les Stocker it soon made a recovery.
Newly qualified nurses, Oct 6 edition, 1983:
Fifty-two recently qualified nurses celebrated their success at the Staff Social Club at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.
They had all passed State Enrolled Nursing or State Registered Nursing exams.
