THIS week we again look back to the 1980s with a selection of stories and pictures from March and April 1983.
Princess Diana visits Aylesbury, March 3 Edition:

Princess Diana opened Hale Leys Shopping Centre on March 2, and thousands of people lined her route from the precinct to the Civic Centre despite the rainy weather.

Among the crowds were some 200 children from Southcourt First School. Headmistress Bernice Chilton praised their good behaviour, saying: "We had biscuits to keep them quiet and apart from that nothing else. The atmosphere just carried them along."

However, The Bucks Herald reported that security officials found the behaviour of the Princess rather more troublesome. Dressed in a stunning bottle green two-piece suit, she made up her own mind who she spoke to and where she wandered, delighting onlookers.

Hundreds of people help raise money for Broughton First School, March 17 Edition:

Broughton First School raised about £450 at its Spring Fair, which went towards the cost of building their library. About 400 people turned up on the day, where the major attraction was a fire engine displayed by Bucks County Fire Brigade.

Pop star visits CBS Records Production Plant in Aylesbury, April 7 Edition:

Chart topper Bonnie Tyler, whose single Total Eclipse of the Heart had recently gone to number one, visited the CBS Records production plant in Aylesbury to see how her hits were made.

Copies of Bonnie's album, Faster than the Speed of Light, were being produced there, and the singer signed copies for many of the employees who were delighted to see her. "Until you come here you just don't realise how much work goes in to producing the records," she said.

Retirement of much-loved teacher at Stone Combined School, April 7 Edition:

Children at Stone Combined School gave their thanks to teacher Naomi Vam Plew when she retired by recording a special song for her and presenting her with the tape.

The much-loved teacher was also presented with a gold watch and many other personal gifts.

Margaret Thatcher visits Halton, April 14 Edition:

Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher came face-to-face with one of the pioneers of the women's vote when she opened Leonard Pulham Abbeyfield extra care home in Halton.

Britain's only female premier acknowledged her debt to 96-year-old Eva Spurnway and other suffragettes like her, saying she owed her present position to their hard work.
