Aylesbury Vale District Council is considering using adverts for outside bodies on its website.
The authority says it wants to include adverts to help keep tax low.

Neil Blake, cabinet member for resources, said: "This is just one of the measures that Aylesbury Vale District Council is considering to help ensure its share of the council tax is kept low during this difficult financial time.

"While we are keen on the income we could derive from this scheme we want residents to be clear that we cannot endorse or guarantee any of the products or services advertised.

"We are also concerned that we do not foist a change on those who use the website regularly in case it is detrimental to their experience - so are keen to get the views of local people."

The scheme would be run by a company that sources and hosts advertising on other council websites.

Ads would be mainly from national companies and placed at the top of AVDC's web pages meaning residents will have to scroll further down a web page to find the information they want.

Adverts would be placed on pages that the advertising company chooses, rather than on every page.

What are your thoughts? Do you believe that AVDC should use adverts?

I would be very suprised if this scheme had anything to do with keeping council tax low.

I cannot see the revenue generated by this as being significant enough to have any bearing of the amount of council tax we pay.

However, if the revenue could be seen to be directly funding community projects etc. etc. then that would make a difference. But then AVDC would have to show exactly where the money was going.

Would be nice if the advertising company they use werea a local one also - helping the local economy etc.

Have to say apart from paying the council tax and the other one time I dealt with a parking ticket (issued incorrectly and cancelled) I have never had the urge to browse the AVDC website.

One has to wonder why they never considered running adverts in their pointless magazine.

Oh, I know - because we, the gullible - sorry, taxpaying public are a bottomless pit for the bigwigs to dip into for whatever barmpot project they see fit.

In much the same way as petrol taxes and road taxes pay for road repairs, so will running ads on the council's website help to reduce our council tax?

On many occasions I have been unable to access web pages because an adserver has 'choked'. If this happens to the AVDC website then people will be denied access to vital services. I must therefore vote NO to this proposal.

So how much will they be paying the team to generate the ad revenue? Probably more than they will take in revenue i expect.
