'You're taking our heroes for granted' fury
District council chiefs were this week accused of taking hard working volunteers for granted after an annual awards ceremony was cancelled.
Lib Dem councillor Corry Cashman this week reacted with fury to the news that there would be no Volunteer of the Year Awards for 2010.
Councillors heard that the General Election had left officers with no time to organise the awards, and district council chiefs were wary of going head-to-head with a similar competition in our sister paper, The Bucks Herald.
At a full council meeting at Aylesbury Vale District Council on Wednesday, Cllr Cashman said: "They're unsung heroes in our communities.
"They deserve recognition and celebration.
"It is an indication that this council takes the work of these fine, public spirited people for granted."
In response, Councillor Pam Pearce said that a ceremony would be held in early 2011.
She stated: "Because volunteers are so valued, I think these awards have to be done properly."
But Cllr Cashman said: "It's supposed to be an annual event, not one held every two years."
