And after top scoring across all five semi-finals, there is a great chance he will be crowned the nation’s Mastermind.

The final, aired on BBC2 at 9pm tonight, will see Alan answer questions on his specialist subject, Thunderbirds.

Alan’s first choice for a subject was wars of the roses but it was rejected because someone else chose it for the heats.

For the second part of the final, Alan will tackle some tricky general knowledge questions before host John Humphrys reveals the winner.

Two weeks ago, Alan’s semi-final saw him impress with his knowledge of British summer Olympic champions.

When added to his general knowledge score, he finished with 24 – a point ahead of second place. In his heat, Alan scored a stunning 31.

Town residents have taken to Facebook to send best wishes to Alan.

Buckingham Town Councillors Christine Strain-Clark and Jon Harvey said they will be tuning in and there have been dozens of good luck messages.

Sheila Handley said: “Best of luck. Hope the questions are shorter than last time! We’ll be watching.”

Bren Roberts said ‘good luck sir’, David Haynes said ‘all the very best’.

And Jules Barnard said: “Good luck. Buckingham will be watching. No pressure!”

Mastermind ran from 1972 until 1997. It was then revived on The Discovery Channel in 2001 and returned to the BBC in 2003.
