Vale pupils celebrate GCSE success

The waiting was finally over for hundreds of pupils across the Vale as they nervously picked up the envelopes containing their GCSE grades yesterday.

Schools were packed with excited teenagers who shared mixed fortunes as their crucial marks were announced.

Aylesbury Vale Academy has started its transformation from Quarrendon School well with a four per cent increase in the amount of students receiving A* to C grades.

Only five years ago, barely 20 per cent of students were walking away with five or more A* to C grades.

But today, the future looks bright, as 73 per cent of students are now attaining at least five.

At Mandeville School, 97 per cent of pupils gained five or more GCSE passes A* to G grade and 72 per cent of the students achieved A* to C grades.

And there was a huge grin across the face of Peter Norman, head at Waddesdon Church of England School yesterday.

Results showed that 82 per cent of students gained five or more A* to C grades, with 73 per cent getting five or more, including maths and English.

Among the high-fliers was Georgia Farquharson, who said: "I cried through my Chemistry exam, I thought it was so hard, but I got a B.

"I put blood and sweat into it, so I was really pleased."

The teenager also picked up A*s in Textiles and Religious Studies, and an impressive nine As.

Also celebrating was Jim Maynard, who said: "I went from a predicted G to a B in graphics.

"It annoys me when people say GCSEs are getting easy, it takes a lot of work."

The Grange School has moved into the top 25 per cent of schools in the country after increasing the amount of pupils getting five A* to C grades.

And Aylesbury Grammar School pupils were celebrating after an astounding 47 students gained all A* and A grades, including six who managed A*s in all their subjects.

This year saw the highest percentage of A and A* grades at 72 per cent.
