Vale council wins county show trophy with £12,000 marquee
A council which spent nearly £12,000 on its marquee at the county show walked away with a top award last week.
Aylesbury Vale District Council's marquee won the best non agricultural trade stand at the show on Thursday.
The stand, which at 11,700 was nearly 2,000 more expensive than 2009's offering, even contained an arcade dance game, which district councillor Derrick Isham tried his hand (and feet) at.
Leader John Cartwright said he was delighted to win the award. "We have a stand every year and the girls make a fantastic effort so I am delighted for them that we have won.
"I can ensure you we shall find a bottle of champagne to celebrate when we get back to our offices."
He added: "We have maintained our appearance, it does cost money but it's a good show of support."
In stark contrast, Bucks County Council's stand was massively scaled back from last year's one, due to the huge budget cuts they are facing.
Its 2010 offering cost 5,856 compared to 17,547 in 2009.
Deputy leader Bill Chapple said: "There are some who said maybe we shouldn't be here but that is like closing a supermarket to its customers."
The county council tent was promoting the Bucks Debate, a series of meetings to be held in September, in which householders can suggest ways the authority can save millions of pounds in response to Government cutbacks.
