Two prison officers in charge of 320 inmates at Springhill
Just two officers were left in charge of 320 prisoners on a night shift at Springhill prison, inspectors found during a surprise visit.
Both Springhill and Grendon prisons have been hit by staff shortages in an attempt to cut costs within the prison service.
Inspectors from the Independent Monitoring Board of prisons said the problem of staff shortages is so chronic there are inadequate levels of night staffing.
Grendon's status as a therapeutic prison is also under threat as there are limited number of staff who can lead the therapy classes.
