A pub has been inundated with flowers and cards from locals following the sudden death of its popular landlord.
Peter Webster, 56, who ran the Lion in Waddesdon, had been feeling under the weather and still couldn’t shake off a cough after a holiday to Egypt in mid-May, so wife Annette encouraged him to go back to the doctors.
He was admitted to Stoke Mandeville Hospital with a suspected viral infection but further tests revealed he had advanced pancreatic cancer.
On May 22, doctors discovered that it had spread to his liver, kidneys and stomach and the father-of-three slipped away the next day.
Annette, who has been married to Peter for more than 30 years, said: “It feels like I’ve lost my left hand side. We’ve been together since age 14 and we’ve worked together 24/7.”
Son Matthew and daughters Lucy and Emily – all in their 30’s – have joined their mum in praising the nurses in the hospital’s intensive therapy unit. Annette said: “Angels isn’t the word for those girls. The support they gave us was amazing.”
Peter, who had run The Lion for more than 10 years, was a familiar and well respected face in the village.
The community’s lovefor the big-hearted landlord has been evident in the huge number of cards and flowers the family has received – over 200.
Annette said: “It’s been a real comfort to realise we’re not alone in our grief. We’ve been overwhelmed by it all.”
The keen golfer, originally from Leeds, was committed to taking his grandson Harrison, nine, to golf lessons each week and enjoyed sharing his love of cooking with six-year-old granddaughter Macy.
He was also renowned for his commitment to a number of charities, and raised thousands in his lifetime for organisations including Little Heroes and Helen &Douglas House, to name just two.
Daughter Lucy, 34, said: “We can’t get our heads round it. It still feels like he’s going to walk through the door.”
There will be a service at St Michael and all Angels church in Waddesdon at 2pm on Monday where all are welcome, followed by a private committal for family only, before a barbecue back at The Lion.
The Websters have requested family flowers only but will be collecting for the Pancreatic Cancer UK and Stoke Mandeville Hospital’s ITU in Peter’s memory.
