The Bucks County Show must go on
'The show must go on' was the message from the 143rd Bucks County Show on Thursday.
Torrential downpours during the past few days meant much of Weedon Park was reduced to muddy mush.
But the star attractions including the RAF pipe band champions, racing camels, a sheep show and all of the livestock competitions and trade stands continued to entertain visitors.
However, show organisers expect turnout to be down from 25,000 last year.
But they remain upbeat. Ray Stollery, one of the show organisers, speaking yesterday morning, joked: "It could have been worse – it could have snowed."
He added: "I can't believe we are going to match last year's figures. For the last 10 years we have been extremely lucky with the weather and we are due for a bad one.
"However there still seem to be a number of people around the walkways – true British spirit will come through in the end."
He said that fortunately most of the heavy trade stand vehicles had been put in place before Wednesday's rain. Traffic also ran more smoothly than last year, although a cattle truck that broke down caused some jams.
Richard Jones, of Aylesbury, who visited yesterday the show yesterday with his young family, said: "If it rains it is always a mud-fest but that's all right. To be honest our kids have more fun when it's muddy. We plan just to mooch about because we like to see all the tractors and animals."
He added: "Racing camels? The kids will love them."
Organisers have recommended that visitors utilise a free bus service from Station Way, Aylesbury, as the best way to get to the show.
