Police are treating a ‘terrifying’ arson at an elderly woman’s Buckingham home as an attempt ‘to endanger life’.

The incident occurred yesterday (23/5) in School Lane at about 4pm.

The victim, a woman in her seventies, was at home when she noticed smoke coming from outside her front door.

She saw that the doormat outside the door was on fire and was blocking the exit, which was her only way of leaving her home.

The victim managed to extinguish the flames herself before the fire brigade arrived at the scene.

Investigating officer Det Con Edward Blackburn of Force CID in Aylesbury said: “This was a terrifying experience for the victim and it is vital that if anyone has any information they come forward to the public so we can bring the perpetrators to justice.

“If you have any information about the incident please call the 24-hour Thames Valley Police enquiry centre on 101.”If you do not want to speak directly to the police you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
