Speed cameras in Bucks set to be scrapped

Speed cameras in Bucks could be scrapped as a result of funding cuts.

Cabinet member for transportation, Cllr Val Letheren, said the Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership, which manages speed cameras in the area, could be wound up if funding is not forthcoming.

"If there is no funding forthcoming then the partnership could cease operations.

"Transport for Buckinghamshire is considering whether to suspend speed enforcement in Bucks," she added.

Buckinghamshire has a total of 51 fixed cameras and 64 mobile cameras.

Cllr Letheren added that the police were still obliged to enforce law and that the council could pay them to undertake mobile speed enforcement.

She pointed out that speed cameras cost a lot of money to maintain.

It is likely that broken cameras will not be repaired but will remain to act as a deterrent, with the council refusing to reveal which cameras are still in operation.
