STAFF and students at John Colet School, Wendover, are celebrating being awarded specialist school status, announced today (Wednesday).
From September, the school will have the added accolade of being a Humanities College, with English, History and Religious Education as its specialisms.
Head Christine McLintock said: "This is excellent news, we are delighted. Our new status will enable us to introduce many new activities and enhance what we already offer students. It's a really exciting time for us and I can only say a big thank you to everyone who was involved in our submission.
"We would like to thank the Wendover Trust, the Friends of John Colet, local businesses, the Aylesbury Hundreds Rotary Club and RAF Halton who have all backed the school in achieving specialist status by helping us to raise the 50,000 sponsorship which was needed to take our bid forward.
With the school's new status comes an additional 100,000 from the Department of Children, Schools and Families for capital projects, which will fund major refurbishments in the key areas of English, History and Religious Education and ICT development.
The school will also receive a further 150,000 each year for three years to help fund projects within the school in English, History and Religious Education. Some of this money will benefit the wider community, for example working with St Mary's Church, Wendover. Humanities College status will include joint projects in our specialist areas within the John Colet Liaison Group, which comprises Wendover C of E Junior School, Halton Combined School, Aston Clinton Combined School, Weston Turville C of E School, John Hampden Infant School and the Sir Henry Floyd School in Aylesbury. The group already puts on joint arts and music festivals and is currently running a maths project."
