Special guests welcomed to Waddesdon

TWO special guests were welcomed to Waddesdon earlier this week.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall visited to celebrate the fact that Prince Charles designed the label for the 2004 vintage of Chteau Mouton Rothschild.

The commissioning of famous artists to design the labels for each new vintage of Chteau Mouton Rothschild started in 1924. Every year since 1945 the Mouton label has been illustrated with an original artwork by a contemporary artist. The Prince of Wales was happy to provide one of his watercolours depicting the Cap d'Antibes to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Entente Cordiale.

During their visit the Royal guests had the opportunity to view three new paintings that will be on display in the House for this season. A pair by G.P. Panini that depict the lavish ball and concert hosted by the French ambassador to Rome in 1751 to mark the long-awaited arrival of the eldest son of the Dauphin of France and Jean-Simeon Chardin's Boy building a house of cards, painted in 1735.

To mark the occasion their Royal Highnesses agreed to plant a tree. The Gardens Team chose an Acer Pseudoplatanus - a variegated form of maple - which had been grafted from some of the more unusual tree stock still surviving at Waddesdon and which were originally planted by Baron Ferdinand in the 1870s.
