The Friars Square shopping centre was evacuated this afternoon.

Around lunchtime shoppers and staff were told to leave the centre, over what later turned out to be a false alarm.

The incident lasted around 20 minutes.

A spokesman for the centre said that incidents like this happen ‘every so often’ and usually arise when a staff member in one of the shop units accidentally knocks one of the alarms.

The centre is now open as normal.
