School walk now takes 20 minutes longer after path blocked in Mandeville

A closed footpath is forcing mothers with young children to walk to school along busy and dangerous roads.

The path linking Stoke Mandeville Hospital and Stoke Mandeville Stadium was shut amid health and safety concerns during building work.

Parents with children at William Harding Combined School used to take the path to access the bridge under the railway.

For a short time access was possible through a gap in a fence but this was recently boarded up.

Parents say they are unhappy they have to walk with their young families along busy roads and want the situation resolved.

They say it adds 20 minutes to their journey time.

The gap in the fence opened into the car park of the Olympic Lodge Hotel.

A spokeswoman said: "Once the building works taking place adjacent to Stoke Mandeville Stadium are completed we believe a new access point will be created but at this time it is unsafe to use as it is through the building site.

"In the short term we want to ensure the health and safety of our neighbours which is why the fence, which has never been an access point, was repaired."

Bucks County Councillor Brian Roberts, who has been looking into the problem on behalf of residents, said: "We have been told that to help access in the short term, Bellwinch have put a path through from Fuggles Close into Stadium Approach to help with this problem.

"The site manager has said he fully understands residents' frustrations, but has asked for us to be patient."
