Reducing speeds won't save lives
I am writing to voice my objections to the plans to lower speed limits in area 12.
Namely, I wish to object to the lowering of speed limits along classified roads (ie. A413, B4033).
I believe that there is no need for the lower speed limits, and furthermore it is not in the best interests of residents of Aylesbury Vale.
Many residents will not bother to read the 'Public Notices' small print of the local newspaper as I have done today, so will be oblivious to the plans.
I believe that my voice herewith will represent the majority of these residents (as motorists) who use these roads on a regular basis.
The reasons for my objections to this speed limit 'slashing' are as follows.
There is no evidence to suggest a lower speed limit will make these roads safer.
In my experience, a road where a motorist is forced to drive at a lower speed limit than conditions permit, is in fact more dangerous than allowing motorists to adjust their speed to their own judgement.
An example of this is tailgating, where a motorist drives dangerously close to the vehicle in front that is sticking to a 40-limit, let's say, when it is clearly safe to drive up to 50mph.
Other issues involve users deliberately breaking the new speed limits in protest at the dictatorship imposed by the council with these changes, often causing more carelessness and inevitably more accidents.
Lastly, I believe that this action is not in the best interests of the majority of the people of the Vale - I believe if you ask the electorate, a vast majority of them will be unaware of these plans, and thus, is not democratic.
I propose that there should be, in the least, a public consultation for this matter.
