Parking charges to increase as AVDC looks to make £1m savings

Parking charges in Aylesbury are set to shoot up as the district council seeks to balance the books for the following year.

Last night bosses at Aylesbury Vale District Council unveiled plans to make more than 1 million of savings, with parking set to net more than 260,000.

Among the measures approved at a lively budget meeting last night were cuts to grants to voluntary groups, pulling funding to the Reflex Gym in Winslow, slashing the St Joseph's Playscheme in the summer and moving staff out of their Friars Square offices.

Staff have also agreed to a pay freeze this year, with a guaranteed 1.5 per cent lined up for everyone in 2011/12.

Lib Dem, Steven Lambert, sent messages to the internet through his Twitter account during the meeting last night.

He said: "Saddened that Tories voted to axe the grant for southcourt walton court community project, relate, citizens advice & other voluntary bodies."

He also indicated that Lib Dems would support an increase in tax: "stevenlambert1: Is surprised at the tories a 1.95% increase... Or 2.09 per year reduction.. Or 4p per week. Making a loss to council budget of 139,500..."

By making the cuts, Tory chiefs say that have been able to limit their share of this year's council tax increase to 1.95 per cent, but they have been heavily criticised for the scale of the cuts.
