Some love it, some hate it. Top Gear. Jeremy Clarkson and friends is not everybody’s cup of tea. However, take a look at the programme and note, centre stage, the Toyota Hilux that even they could not destroy.
Now, we are getting one, as a rescue vehicle to replace our existing Toyota Forerunner which we have run into the ground after two decades of devoted service.
Our Forerunner, Big Bertha, survived everything our rescuers could throw at it.
It went anywhere, did anything, never let us down until finally old age and a hard life resulted in a shattered wishbone (whatever that is?) and a trip to the knackers yard.
We were grounded. No more ‘off the road’ heroic rescues. We were lost until Toyota (UK) heard of our plight and came to our own rescue. Erica Haddon of Toyota had a brainwave.
One of those Top Gear indestructible Hiluxes had been out on trial. Of course it came out with flying colours and would be ideal to cope with the challenges of our rescue teams.
Big Bertha’s suggested replacement was bright red.
Its obvious isn’t it, she was going to be ‘Big Red’ and to top it all it already had a snorkel and winch for those impossible situations.
Big Bertha will put in her final appearance at the handover of Big Red to our rescue team. I know she will stand proud.
A tower of strength throughout the formative years of the Hospital.
And I am confident that Big Red will be with us for decades to come.
