One way isn't our way in Risborough

Two rogue Princes Risborough town councillors have called for the one-way system trial to be abandoned.

The market town has had one-way traffic running through the High Street and Duke Street since November 2 last year but some local traders have said it is bad for business.

Councillor William Bendyshe-Brown and Cllr Carl Etholen called for an end to the system at a town council meeting last week.

The two councillors had asked local businesses what they thought of the new system. "Out of 55 businesses 38 were against, six for and 11 were neutral in their assessment of the benefits of the trial," said Cllr Bendyshe-Brown.

"Several businesses demonstrated that they were losing custom and money and the top end of the High Street, where all the queuing traffic occurs at rush hour time, said they might as well close at 3.30pm."

But chairman of the council and Town Mayor, Alan Turner, said: "I thought that they were playing to the gallery and I was very disappointed with them. We are trying to do this sensibly and we don't need people trying to make political gain."

He said that the council would meet with businesses on February 17 to discuss the system.

"We have invited them to come along and tell us what their problems are and what the issues are an we can take it on board," he said.

"On the other side of the coin there are an awful lot of residents who think it's wonderful.

"We had all that bad weather, plus we are in the middle of a recession, plus it is a big change.

"All those factors rolled into one. You will get some people who aren't too pleased."

The system was set up in a partnership with Bucks County Council at a cost of 60,000.
