Oh deer - its Radio 4 at Pitstone allotments
The sound of John Humphrys' voice is used to scare away unwanted deer on Pitstone Allotments.
A new deer alarm system has been installed as herds of the animals have been rampaging through the allotments and eating the fruit and vegetables.
The deer are only deterred by the sound of human voices, so Radio 4 has been programmed to switch on when deer are detected by sensors.
Secretary to the Pitstone Allotments Association, Nikki Mattey, said the animals become accustomed to music so human voices on the radio are the only noises that will keep them at bay.
"They usually come first thing in the morning so that's when John Humphrys is on. Either that, or they come in the evening when there is no one around.
"The alarms have sensors which pick up on movement so when the deer come close, the radio starts.
"One has already been stolen so maybe it was the deer trying to change the radio station," joked Mrs Mattey.
"We got a grant from the parish council to buy the alarms.
"The real test will be in the winter when there is less food around. We are hoping they won't have got too used to John Humphrys by then."
