'Numerous signs are blighting Aylesbury'

Poorly placed street signs are blighting Aylesbury town centre, one of the town's leading civic groups has warned.

The Aylesbury Society says areas in need of de-cluttering include outside the Civic Centre and the pavement in Walton Terrace.

It comes as the Government launched a national initiative to remove unnecessary signs.

Bucks County Council says it is to review signage, while Aylesbury Vale District Council has already responded to a complaint by the society and removed signs around Walton Pond.

Roger King, Aylesbury Society honorary secretary, said the signs are completely out of scale with their location.

"All these signs just add blight to the street scape and the ones we have picked up on are in the conservation area or adjacent to listed buildings – they are just plain ugly basically.

"Why do we need them?

"It probably costs quite a few thousand quid to dig a hole and put the posts in.

"They look awful and are an obstruction on the pavement."

He said the society was particularly unhappy with a post which obscures their heritage sign outside the Civic Centre.

He went on: "There's also a 20mph sign in Castle Street which is on the pavement against a listed building but you would never see it because by the time you swing around the corner you would have driven past it anyway.

"It could have been put on an existing sign opposite."

Bucks County Council says it will be rolling out a review of signs to see whether they are needed.

As a result it will be combining signs and reducing poles.

The Aylesbury transport hub signs will be removed on September 6.
