A man in his 60s was killed when the light aircraft he was flying crashed in a field.

Police were called to reports of a plane in difficulty at about 7.40pm on Wednesday night.

The plane came down in a field off the the A413, at Hedges Farm, just north of Padbury.

The pilot, who was the only person on board, died at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

Police officers were at the scene until 4pm yesterday, Thursday, and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) sent a team to investigate.

The plane is believed to have taken off from Turweston Aerodrome.

Speaking on Wednesday night, Supt Gez Chiariello, LPA Commander for Aylesbury Vale, said: “Officers are currently in Buckingham following a light aircraft collision.Sadly the sole occupant of the plane died at the scene. No-one was hurt on the ground.

“Investigators from the Air Accident Investigation Branch are due to attend to investigate and establish the circumstances of what has happened.”

Two land ambulances and an air ambulance were sent to the incident.

A Lenborough resident, who did not want to be identified, said there had been reports of a distress signal from a light aircraft earlier in the evening.

Fire crews from Buckingham and Winslow attended the scene, along with a specialist 4x4 Unimog unit from Great Holm, and a specialist Urban Search and Rescue team from Aylesbury were put on standby at Winslow Fire Station.

Incident commander crew manager Kieron Thomas, from Buckingham Fire Station, said firefighters were helped to locate the scene by the searchlights of the police helicopter and another aircraft in the air dipping its wings to indicate the location.

He said: “We spoke with the control room at Bournemouth Airport who assisted us with isolating the engine and familiarity with the aircraft to make the scene safe.”
