An almost unanimous vote saw councillor Tuffail Hussain voted in as the new Aylesbury mayor for 2014-2015 last night.

All councillors bar one – which was an abstension – voted in favour and the chamber erupted in applause as the mantle was handed over.

Tuffail, of Gatehouse Ward, shook former mayor Tom Hunter-Watts’ hand and said: “I am humbled and privileged to accept the position of mayor.”

Mr Hunter-Watts bowed out with a speech, saying: “No one can emerge from this job without a greater respect for the town of Aylesbury.

“I’d like to congratulate Tuffail on his new post and thank the people of Aylesbury for their support during my time as mayor.”
