The Roald Dahl Festival in Aylesbury is terrific fun

There’s no need to stray far from Aylesbury this weekend, with a terrific line up of big summer events to entertain the entire family.

The annual Roald Dahl festival will fill the town centre with wild and wacky colourful characters on Saturday while Aylesbury on Sea on Sunday will see our town turned into the seaside.

There’s also the Relay for Life at Aylesbury Rugby Club, Weston Turville, where you can cheer on all the people raising money for Cancer Research during the 24 hour challenge, which kicks off at noon on Saturday.

Plus, don’t forget the circus in Watermead which runs until Sunday.

And if you are prepared to venture a few miles from the town, you’ll find Princes Risborough’s brilliant week long festival which kicks off on Saturday – and Chilfest in Tring, which started on Friday and continues on Saturday and Sunday.

The Dahl festival proudly celebrates one of the world’s most popular authors and will begin with a spectacular parade of more than 600 school children.

They will leave St Mary’s Church, Aylesbury at 11am and proceed through the town holding puppets and artwork from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, as the international best seller celebrates its 50th birthday.

A range of family entertainment will continue across the town until 3pm.

There will be inflatable fun, live music, crafts, storytelling, trails, games, a barbecue and face painting. The event is free, but there may be a small charge for some individual activities.

The following day from 11am-4pm Aylesbury will be turned into the seaside when Kingsbury will play host to Aylesbury On Sea.

A pirate theme will ensure this free event is a hearty affair. Pirates will make sure families have a swashbuckling time with pirate themed stilt walkers, Punch and Judy, donkey rides and bouncy castles.

There will also be a sandpit and Aylesbury rock!

On the same day as the Dahl festival, Risborough will host a childrens’ fancy dress parade down the High Street and into Wades Park led by the Chiltern Hills Brass Band.

In the park there will be lots to entertain visitors including the infamous tug of war, races, music and martial arts and cheerleader displays.

In the evening there is to be a Casino Royale event at the community centre. Further into the week, through to Saturday July 12, the Risborough festival will have a 10k run, a childrens’ chocolate hunt, concerts, walks, factory tours and a barn dance.

On Saturday Jason Donovan tops the bill at Pendley Manor’s Chilfest that also includes Toyah, Leee John (Imagination), Boney M featuring Maizie Williams, Go West and Bad Manners.

And the festival finishes on Sunday afternoon with Union J, three piece girl band Stooshe, Rough Copy, 5th Story, 911, Tich, Amelia Lily, Loveable Rogues and The Reverie.
