‘Outstanding’ hospital staff were rewarded for their dedication with three national awards.

The second annual Spinal Injury Association Rebuilding Lives awards recognised the achievements of both staff and patients working to rebuild lives after a spinal cord injury.

Based at the National Spinal Injury Centre at Stoke Mandeville hospital, St Francis ward took home the Outstanding Team award.

St Francis is the only one of its kind in the UK that is dedicated to children and young people with spinal cord injuries.

Sister Sara O’Shea said: “We were thrilled just to be nominated for the award.

“To have won and received the award amongst an audience of respected NSIC colleagues, professionals from other spinal units and services, and some of the patients and their families that we’ve cared for, was a truly humbling experience.

“We are so proud to have recognition for our team of highly specialised staff who are dedicated and determined in service provision for children and young people with spinal cord injuries.”

Other Bucks Healthcare NHS Trust staff winners on the night included Michelle Clark for Outstanding Occupational Therapist.

She said: “Winning the award was a humbling experience and although given to me as an individual I would not have achieved it without the continual support and team work of my colleagues.

“Ultimately however it is those who have spinal injuries who are outstanding in what they achieve both on a day to day basis and with their lives as a whole.”

Paul Kennedy took home the award for Outstanding Psychologist.

He said: “This is a special award for me as it comes from the leading national user-led charity, the Spinal Injuries Association.

“It marks my 30th year working with spinal cord injury patients.

“It has been a pleasure working with such great people, both patients and staff.”

Other Bucks Healthcare staff nominated were Dr Allison Graham as Outstanding Consultant, Ruth Peachment as Outstanding Occupational Therapist, Debbie Green as Outstanding Nurse and Lorraine Hedgecock as Outstanding Healthcare Support and Care worker.
